26 August 2025: Mattaku Saikin no Tantei to Kitara isn’t actually about crazy detectives

Mashiro

This one I recognize.

Mattaku Saikin no Tantei to Kitara (Detectives These Days Are Crazy!) has a lot of silly jokes. There are occasionally some funny bits, but most of the jokes are just merely okay. One recurring visual gag that doesn’t quite work for me involves giving the high school girl assistant, Mashiro, different faces as reaction shots. They’re usually exaggerated caricatures and sometimes unusually detailed. I assume these wacky face swaps are parodies of various Japanese celebrities recognizable to viewers familiar with local pop culture references, but to me they’re just random dudes mugging for the camera.

Hana

I like this cloak that Hana always wears.

Normally, I would have dropped a show like this already for not quite being my thing, but I’m enjoying Hanakana overacting as the freakishly strong but dimwitted sidekick. I also find Hirano Aya voicing a “normal” character rather endearing. (She plays the assistant for a second detective.) Fairouz Ai is also good as a mad scientist lady (I guess she’s more eccentric than mad). There’s a slightly annoying quality to way she play the character that works well. I should have expected this, but it’s genuinely difficult sometimes not to hear Archer’s voice anytime Suwabe Junichi says anything. (He’s the voice of Nagumo Keiichirou, the lead detective in the show.)

Azuha

Not a detective.

I suppose I ought to mention that Mattaku Saikin no Tantei to Kitara isn’t much of a detective show, just to set the expectations of anyone thinking about getting into the series. The detectives also are not crazy, although they sure encounter a lot crazy folks around town. In fact, I’ll go so far as to claim the detectives in Detectives These Days Are Crazy! are relatively normal, even though the one in his mid 30s is physically falling to pieces. Maybe it’s not his years. Maybe he’s got a lot of mileage. Or maybe it’s just the standard anime thing where being middle-aged puts people back-to-back with death.
