9 Sustainable Perfumes, Reviewed

Chloé Signature Eau de Parfum
Best worn: Daytime
Price: ££
In my early twenties, Chloé Signature Eau de Parfum* was all that I wore. It’s a feminine, floral scent, reminiscent of peonies, rose, and cedar.
With Chloé quickly becoming the go-to socially-conscious luxury fashion house, I was excited to receive a 30ml edition of their eponymous scent as a gift ahead of their B-Corp Certification announcement. That same classic feminine scent instantly brought me back to my days working in Paris, only now, it feels updated to meet my values.
My rating: 8/10
Sana Jardin Berber Blonde Eau de Parfum
Best worn: Anytime
Price: £££
My current go-to scent is Sana Jardin’s Berber Blonde. This feels more grown-up than Chloé, and has a sweet neroli and orange blossom scent that’s balanced with warm, balmy musk. I love musk-based fragrances, as you’ll see below with The Body Shop’s iconic White Musk, but this is more complex and confident.
Sana Jardin have a beautiful backstory, being made by female harvesters from the rural flower-growing region in Morocco, who benefit from Sana Jardin’s employment and circular principles in equal measure.
If you’re not ready to spend out on a full perfume, I recommend starting with the Sana Jardin Discovery Set*.
My rating: 9/10

The Body Shop White Musk Eau de Parfum
Best worn: Daytime
Price: £
The Body Shop’s White Musk Eau de Parfum* is perhaps the ultimate starter perfume. Not only is it light, warm, yet fresh, it’s also cruelty-free, vegan, and affordable. It’s something I’ll happily wear to meetings, brunch, and even the dentist. It’s pleasant, clean, and not too complex for an everyday scent.
Out of all these sustainable perfumes, this is the best value and continues to be a favourite in my perfume collection.
My rating: 8/10
Floral Street Eau de Parfum
Best worn: Anytime
Price: ££
My most repurchased perfume brand has to be Floral Street. My first scent was Ylang Ylang Espresso*, a bold yet sweet scent I had the pleasure of discovering a few years ago. Next, London Poppy*, a citrusy, zingy scent balanced apricot blossom, neroli, and cedarwood.
Then, Wild Vanilla Orchid*, a perfume I wore for a solid year without fail. If you like vanilla, but wish to wear something more complex, this is for you. A vanilla base is accented with citrus, sandalwood, and pepper.
And the pièce de résistance: Arizona Bloom*. This scent is layered with gourmand notes and a peppery twist: Balinese Coconut, Madagascan Black Pepper, and fig top notes.
Floral Street focuses on sourcing sustainable ingredients, and provides wholly recyclable packaging, which I love.
My rating: 8/10

LUSH Shade Perfume
Best worn: Anytime
Price: £
In 2021, I discovered LUSH had launched a new perfume, and this particular scent has a pertinent backstory in sustainable ingredient sourcing. LUSH’s Shade Perfume is a warm, woody, unisex scent with a rich blend of sandalwood and olibanum (also known as frankincense).
It’s these two tree-derived ingredients that are important here: so often, they are extracted unsustainably. LUSH went the extra mile for these two ingredients, working with harvesters in West Timor to extract sandalwood from protected and sustainable trees, and harvesters in Dayaxa region in Somaliland, both of which are fully traceable.
This scent quickly became my boyfriend’s favourite, and it lasts throughout the day. In fact, he’s almost finished his second bottle now!
My rating: 8/10
Anatomé Expression Eau de Parfum
Best worn: Daytime
Price: £££
You might know Anatomé for their clean supplements and sleep sets. Well, they recently came out with a wellbeing fragrance line, and from it, Expression was a surprising favourite. Breaking away from my usual musk and floral scents, it’s a clean, clear scent with warm mossy depths.
Anatomé Expression Eau de Parfum (gifted) feels like a breath of fresh sea air; something I enjoy living on the coast here in Brighton. With warm cedarwood, spicy clove, and grounding sea moss, oakmoss, and treemoss, I enjoy wearing this scent on days I wish to have a clear head. It feels like a fragrance for me, rather than for others to smell me in.
And, as with all Anatomé products, the ingredients are carefully selected, GMO-free, and come in recyclable packaging.
My rating: 8/10

L’Occitane Verveine Eau de Toilette
Best worn: Daytime
Price: ££
For another nature-based scent, look no further than the L’Occitane Verveine Eau de Toilette*. This bright, verbena-based fragrance gives a sweet citrus hit that I so enjoy on days I’m going to be out in the countryside.
Like Chloé, L’Occitane is another French beauty brand that recently received its B-Corp certification, proving their commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
My rating: 7/10
Miller Harris Soufflot Eau de Parfum
Best worn: Evening
Price: £££
The most seductive scent on my list has to be the Miller Harris Soufflot Eau de Parfum*. Named after the Rue Soufflot, as mentioned in Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, it’s a heady gourmand scent with tobacco top notes, that feels like wearing your boyfriend’s shirt on a Sunday morning.
Despite its complexity, Miller Harris uses a high percentage of natural ingredients, and all fragrances are vegan, free from phthalates, artificial colorants, parabens and formaldehydes.
My rating: 9/10

Tenth Muse ‘Date Night’ Solid Perfume
Best worn: Evening
Price: £
Finally, a rogue entry with Tenth Muse Date Night Solid Perfume*. I love this perfume. I love its flirty peony, peach, vanilla and jasmine scent. I love its handbag-able style. I love its satisfying metal vessel with magnetic closure. It is perfectly formed for every city girl, no matter the size of their handbag. And it’s inexpensive, too.
In terms of sustainability, Tenth Muse is the only refillable fragrance on my list. It also comes in recyclable packaging, and is 100% cruelty-free.
My rating: 9/10
