17 June 2025: Ballpark de Tsukamaete! needs Rule 34 (wait, hear me out)
Windy day at the ballpark.
Ballpark de Tsukamaete! (Catch Me at the Ballpark!) focuses more on a small community that develops around a baseball stadium than it does on the sport itself. It has a sizable cast that includes people who work at the stadium, the players on the team, and the fans. It’s probably for the best that there’s not much actual baseball in the show, since it would distract from the myriad stories that the series is really about. It would also look totally gank, as the animation is rather crude basically all of the time (except the ED). This is the part where you’re expecting me to bring up fan service and explain what the title of this blog post means, isn’t it?
Fan artists, where you at?
My favorite Ballpark de Tsukamaete! bit involves a concession stand worker named Yamada Natsuno who wishes she could wear a cute outfit and walk around the stadium like the beer vendor girls do. Natsuno has a high opinion of her legs and despairs that they’re going unseen by the general public. What a waste! That’s it. That’s the joke. Still, it’s these sorts of small gags that give Catch Me at the Ballpark! its charm. Natsuno’s tragedy is our tragedy, and it’s a better gag than the “main” plot involving Potato-san and Totally-Not-Power-from-Chainsaw-Man who keeps him supplied with 700-yen beers.
