1 July 2025: It’s the end of the world as we know it, and Lazarus feels fine
I have no idea why Hersch drew a gun in this scene.
Lazarus is a high-profile anime that does not live up to its hype. This is the fate of most shows when expectations are set dubiously high, naturally, but Lazarus surely did not need to be this clumsy. Frankly, I don’t feel at all motivated to get into it, and I’m certain there will be no shortage of “Lazarus sucks!” opinions anyone could easily find. I doubt my grievances with the series are at all unique or insightful.
I like your phone.
However, I will mention the problem that bugged me the most while watching this anime: Nobody in the world acts as if they’re about to die. Imagining how to spend one’s final months, weeks, or days is a thought experiment I suspect most people have considered at some point. Quizzing a group of friends about this topic is basically a parlor game. Moreover, we already know firsthand from the Covid pandemic how fragile global supply chains are. Imagine the chaos that would occur when everything grinds to a halt in concert with worldwide anarchy once nothing matters anymore to anyone.
Weren’t you totally fucked up and on the verge of death? Did you take more Hapna for the pain?
But Lazarus doesn’t explore any of that. Money still has value. People still waste their precious remaining moments going to work and making trains run on time. It would be one thing if nobody knew or believed death was imminent, but they do; they simply don’t act that way. I presume the anime wanted to make the stakes seem incredibly high but without having to worry about any of the complications they would entail. However, there was no need to do this in the first place. The fate of the world never needed to be the reason why these misfits were going on episodic missions every week. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to make the stakes personal and important only for those characters specifically instead? Baffling.
