Tokio and Azuma are best friends living in a quiet city, where life is normal and days pass peacefully. But everything changes when an airplane crashes near their town in a cloud of black smoke. Wanting to help, the two teens volunteer for the search and rescue team, hoping to save lives and do something meaningful.
However, what they find is far from expected.
Instead of twisted wreckage and tragedy, the airplane is mostly unharmed, and over 200 passengers are safe and sound. The emergency is over before it really begins, and with their help no longer needed, Tokio and Azuma start heading home.
But then, things take a dangerous turn.
The boys run into someone from their past—an old enemy, who now possesses terrifying new abilities. With strange powers and a twisted grudge, this enemy is determined to destroy them both. Outmatched and with no other option, Tokio and Azuma make a desperate decision: they inject themselves with a mysterious drug and become choujin—superpowered beings with bizarre, unpredictable abilities.
From that moment on, their lives are never the same.
Being a choujin sounds exciting, but Tokio quickly learns it’s more of a burden than a gift. He now has to hide his transformation from his family, avoid getting in trouble at school for skipping class, and deal with the strange and growing number of unusual events in the city. Monsters, battles, and secret organizations begin to appear—all tied to the world of choujin.
