New injustice advent calendar hacks Christmas consumerism and cost-of-living squeeze. Count down to Christmas with zero-waste and without spending a penny.
More than 20 environmental, health and social justice organisations have come together on a zero-waste Christmas initiative to mark the festive season in a feel-good and ethical way.
The digital Injustice Advent Calendar is completely free and gives participants the chance to countdown the days to Christmas by taking one positive action a day. Each daily calendar window gives an insight into the work of a charity or project, and a quick action you can take to make the world a better place.
‘There’s a huge variety of quick and fun actions that help you make an impact and learn something new,’ said Charlotte Timson, CEO of Traidcraft Exchange, the international development charity behind the initiative. ‘Craftivism for more cancer nurses, spotting the signs of modern-day slavery, boosting bees in your local area or learning tips for a zero-waste Christmas – it’s all here.’ The digital initiative is run by Traidcraft Exchange in partnership with 19 other UK charities and not-for-profits, including Anti-Slavery International, Bees for Development, Fashion Revolution, Macmillan Cancer Support, National Deaf Children’s Society, RSPCA and The Sumatran Orangutan Society.
Despite the cost-of-living squeeze, UK shoppers are being prompted to spend hundreds of pounds on advent calendars featuring socks and beauty products – the Injustice Advent Calendar offers a zero-cost and environmentally-friendly alternative.

‘As the world continues to battle the COVID pandemic and confront the climate emergency, people need hope and meaning more than ever,’ said Timson. ‘At its heart, Christmas is about connection and compassion – and this helps us do that, while taking a stand against mass consumerism. So many people want to live in a kinder fairer world, and this advent calendar is one small move in that direction.’
‘We’re delighted to be in this line-up of incredible charities,’ said Alice Woudhuysen, campaigns manager at Macmillan Cancer Support. ‘The festive period is a great opportunity to make a difference and this calendar makes it easy, without costing a penny and with zero waste. People taking part can help environmental, health and social justice causes, including signing up to receive our campaign craft pack to support Macmillan’s call for more cancer nurses, which are needed now more than ever.’
You can sign up to take part in the calendar here from 8 November.
