DLF-Medanta hospital project in GK-I stays on track as Delhi HC refuses interim stay plea by RWA

The Delhi High Court has refused to stay the ongoing construction of a 400-bed multi-speciality hospital in Greater Kailash-I, a joint venture between DLF and Global Health Ltd (Medanta), despite opposition from the local residents’ association.

The project, announced in 2023, is being developed on land leased to Lal Chand Public Charitable Trust and is backed equally by real estate giant DLF and healthcare major Medanta through a special purpose vehicle (SPV). While DLF has invested strategically, Medanta brings in the technical and operational expertise for the hospital aimed at strengthening medical infrastructure in Delhi-NCR.

However, the Greater Kailash Residents Association recently filed a writ petition before the Delhi High Court, raising concerns around potential traffic congestion and pollution due to the project. The matter came up for hearing on July 11, 2025, before Justice Mini Pushkarna, who issued notice in the case but declined to grant an interim stay on construction.

The court also sought responses from several civic and regulatory bodies including the DDA, MCD, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, Delhi Traffic Police, Delhi Jal Board, and Delhi Fire Services.

Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, appearing for DLF and briefed by M/s Karanjawala & Co., argued in favour of the project and underlined the pressing need for advanced healthcare facilities in Delhi. Drawing parallels with schools in residential areas like Vasant Vihar, Nayar questioned whether public welfare projects should be obstructed merely on grounds of inconvenience to residents. He also contested the RWA’s plea to prevent the companies from invoking special equities during the interim stage, a contention that the court did not accept, citing the project’s financial magnitude.

The hospital project has already received all mandatory legal clearances and approvals, according to the Lal Chand Public Charitable Trust.
