Dressing For Autumn with Very

Gallery of outfits for autumn

With the recent cold, wet weather, you may be wondering if it’s time to get the winter wardrobe out. But wait! Summer isn’t over just yet. And upcoming autumn season is a great time to re-style your summer wardrobe, before you pull your woolies out. Transitional dressing can be quite difficult, which is why I’m excited to be partnering with Very once more to highlight how to style your current wardrobe for the new season.

How To Style Your Summer Wardrobe For Autumn

Very has a great selection of women’s dresses from sustainable brands, and I’ve selected three to re-style for you here, so you can wear them for longer. Remember my rule of thumb: only buy something you see yourself wearing 30+ times!

Denim Pinafore Dress

A denim dress is a wardrobe staple. It’s incredibly versatile – as I’ve tried to show here – and can be dressed up and down, for summer or winter. My top tip when choosing a denim dress is to get to know your body type first, and choose a dress that best suits it. Personally, I like outfits that cinch at my waist, and this Mini Dress from Nobody’s Child does just that. On warmer days, I like to wear it as it is, plus my Mary Jane Socks and a contrasting pair of women’s trainers – these being the Hoff MK11s.

For cooler days, I’d recommend wearing a long-sleeve top or shirt underneath the dress. You can also add tights for warmth, although I do prefer sheer tights for a more glossy look.

Black Shift Dress

Next, onto an office-appropriate outfit. I do enjoy dressing more formally, and my wardrobe leans towards work-wear-inspired looks. I don’t know if it’s the business degree, or my need to be dressy when I leave the house as a freelancer of more than 10 years, but I digress. Here, I’ve styled an Armani Exchange Knitted Dress – made entirely from viscose, as part of their sustainability project – with a pair of rolled-down stockings and heels. Without the blazer, you can see the playful mesh back, while the oversized blazer gives it a more angular edge. The blazer, and stockings, are key to switching this up for autumn.

Silk Evening Dress

Finally, how do you restyle an evening dress for autumn? I love wearing silk, and almost all of my evening dresses are 100% silk, both because I prefer natural fibres, and because I think we should feel as good as we look! This AllSaints Rizo Dress has long sleeves, which lends well to cooler weather. I’ve then added booties, which I found second-hand, and my favourite buckle-less belt to cinch in the waist.

My 4 Top Tips For Dressing For Autumn

If you’re thinking about how to re-style your clothes for the cooler weather, here are my top tips:

  • Start with the accessories. Tights, belts, and boots all add a little warmth without requiring a full-blown jumper or jacket.
  • Layer up. Adding a base layer, like a shirt or long-sleeve top, also adds warmth and dimension to an outfit.
  • Try adding some outerwear. British weather can be unpredictable, so consider matching a denim jacket, trench coat, or blazer to your outfit before you leave the house.
  • Hope for sun, prepare for rain. You never know if the sun might re-appear… so keep your sunglasses in your bag, even if they have to be accompanied by an umbrella!
