18 March 2025: Akuyaku Reijou Tensei Oji-san is even better than I hoped
Nice hat.
I continue to be in denial about my apparent interest in villainess-themed anime in general, no thanks to Akuyaku Reijou Tensei Oji-san (The Middle-Aged Man that Reincarnated as a Villainess or From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad’s Been Reincarnated!) being consistently interesting and amusing. This is quite an achievement for an anime built around a gimmick premise. It could have pretty easily tired itself out flogging a single joke, but it’s been good every week for 10 episodes so far.
Local girl makes good. News at 11.
I don’t know if there’s any chance Tensei Ojisan will get a second season, but the series certainly doesn’t seem as if it’s about the end in two episodes. Among the various other villainess-themed shows I’ve watched, Bakarina is the only one I can remember getting a sequel. Unfortunately, Bakarina faltered a bit as it went on, but I’m more generally optimistic about Tensei Ojisan‘s staying power.
Good dad.
I think I feel this way because Bakarina relies a lot on its protagonist overcoming challenges while being rather dense (I mean that in a nice way, okay), while Tensei Ojisan revolves around Kenzaburou/Grace being pleasant to everyone all the time. There haven’t been serious challenges to overcome, but I’ve also never felt as if the show has needed any. This is not my top anime of the season, but it’s comfortably in the top half, and it’s probably going to be at least indirectly responsible for me watching more villainess-themed anime in the future, even if they don’t star fifty-something dudes with comb-overs.
