27 May 2025: Apocalypse Hotel is the best anime of the Spring 2025 season
Every day is a journey.
Another triumph of original anime, Apocalypse Hotel has been creative and entertaining every week. It also occasionally invites introspection about the relentless and terrifyingly quick passage of time that viewers may remember from Frieren and YKK. I will admit the episode that introduced the tanuki-esque family can be challenging to watch if you’re prone to commiserating with those who have to suffer through problems caused by inconsiderate assholes. Thankfully, those antics were limited to a single episode and they’ve been fine ever since, even though they’ve stuck around as a regular part of the cast. (At least they aren’t kappa.)
Right, so that’s one vote for Peace Through Strength.
If I hadn’t already recently written a post about Lazarus, this would be the part where I compared the two shows—since they’re both original anime—and emphatically state Apocalypse Hotel is far and away the better series. There are, in fact, other original anime this season that I could invoke instead except that I’ve either already dropped or never bothered to start them. Consequently, I can’t claim there’s conclusive evidence to support my opening claim suggesting original anime in general tend to be better than adaptations of video games, light novels, or manga. Nevertheless, finding one that turns out to be as good as Apocalypse Hotel feels rewarding, and has the additional benefit of hooking me each week because there’s no telling where the series will go.
