13 May 2025: Being Gundam-ignorant likely impairs my GQuuuuuuX enjoyment
Wait, are you actually getting UV rays? Is tanning a thing you can do where you are?
My primary reason for watching Kidou Senshi Gundam GQuuuuuuX (Mobile Suit Gundam: GQuuuuuuX) is its Khara (read: post-Gainax Gainax) connection. However, the series is set in an alternate version of the Universal Century 0079 timeline, of which I remain mostly ignorant despite having watched the three compilation movies for First Gundam a long time ago. In the case of GQuuuuuuX, this means I’m constantly going, “Should I know what that is? Should I remember this character? Is it someone new but loosely based on someone from the original timeline?” I sort of agree with claims made by knowledgeable Gundam-watching veterans that one doesn’t need to know the original to enjoy GQuuuuuuX, but not knowing is distracting, at least for me.
Fucking robosexuals, man.
If viewed as a standalone show on its own merits, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is frankly sort of confusing. I don’t just mean the space battles are visually difficult to follow (that’s probably my fault), I mean I don’t know where the series is going. If it’s really only going to be a single cours in length, it seems too short to develop in an adequately meaningful way within the remaining episodes, but perhaps I’m overthinking it. There’s no reason a Gundam series needs to have huge stakes. Maybe GQuuuuuuX is just about space magicians trying to get by. I have it on good authority that just surviving is a noble fight.
