You should probably pay more attention to where you’re going.
GoHands wasn’t always like this. For example, they animated all of those Seitokai Yakuindomo anime adaptations, and none of them were visual atrocities. I’m not sure when they started doing their “thing,” but I’ve heard it was at least as early as K (in 2012). My own first exposure to the distinctive GoHands, uh, style was Hand Shakers. That was really something. And then I watched W’z, which is a sequel to Hand Shakers, but hadn’t been promoted that way so I guess I was technically tricked into it.
All right, the SukiMega hair was also sort of like this sometimes.
But it’s not as if GoHands can’t make a normal show. Some wild visual flair in the trailer and parts of the first episode aside, Suki na Ko ga Megane wo Wasureta (The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses) is not jarring to watch at all. I didn’t watch Dekiru Neko wa Kyou mo Yuuutsu (The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today), but I’ve heard that was mostly fine too. I’ve joked that there’s a Law of Conservation of GoHandsiness, resulting in Momentary Lily being a nearly unwatchable wall-to-wall assault on the eyes, but maybe there’s something to that.
Still images cannot do Momentary Lily justice.
Unfortunately, the first couple of episodes suggest Momentary Lily is simply not a good anime for reasons independent of how it looks. The cliches, the random movement of one character’s enormous zero-gravity breasts, the premature and overly drawn-out attempt at communicating emotional trauma about characters we don’t even know yet…it’s all such a mess. Is it WORSE THAN COSPRAYERS? I guess it has to be, considering I’m more negative about it than my (admittedly increasingly distant) recollections about Hand Shakers, a series that features a masochistic side character whose powers are directly proportional to how much her partner grinds his foot against her vagina, mind you.
You’ll be fine. Walk it off.
Am I gonna continue watching Momentary Lily? It’ll get at least three episodes out of me, and probably at least four. Hell, it’s probably more likely than not that I’ll watch an entire season. I’m at least curious where it’s going to go from here, and what sort of anime crimes GoHands has planned for us. I want to claim I am not trying watch it “ironically,” but there is a degree of morbid fascination involved. GoHands has at least got that going for it.
