Maomao

It’s not peeping.

As a rule of thumb, I generally prefer watching an adaptation before reading the source material if given a choice. (This also applies to regular movies and television, not just anime.) Either order results in “spoilers” for whichever medium is second, but I usually find I’m able to enjoy both the original and the adaptation to a greater extent if I experience the adaptation first. Going the other way around, I’m more often nagged by “that’s not how it was in the book” thoughts. In the case of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries), it so happens I watched the first anime season, then read the first three light novel volumes before starting the currently airing second season.

Maomao and Yinghua

I’m not trying to blame the victim, but you should have known better by now.

Thus, I’m able to compare the effects in question both ways for the same series. In the instant case, my adaptation-first preference again seems to hold true. Not that I’m enjoying the second season of the anime appreciably less as a result of knowing what happens or whatever, but I have stopped reading the books so the anime can get ahead again. (Based on how far the second season of the anime has gotten so far in seven episodes, its next cours should extend beyond the three volumes of The Apothecary Diaries that I have read.)

Shin

I thought this was Lihua in the first episode. There’s no corresponding scene in the books.

With regard to the adaptation itself, the anime seems very faithful to the light novels. The most obvious departures that come to mind are the comedic moments animated in a vastly different style for emphasis. The books are not dry, but I think these occasional diversions have been good for the Kusuriya no Hitorigoto anime as a whole. Now, there is an extremely anime moment looming that will test this theory. Will it be adapted as a funny scene or as a serious one? Will it work either way? Unless the anime doesn’t get that far, I suppose I’ll find out in a few weeks. P.S. Spoilers.
