20 May 2025: Watching the sequels to Aharen-san and Bye Bye, Earth
There are more scenes now devoted to the various side characters.
I know I don’t have to watch sequels, but I typically do even if I’m not necessarily highly enthused about the first season of a series. This practice worked to my detriment as recently as Unnamed Memory (spoilers: the anime remained a huge mess), but I still decided to watch the second seasons of Aharen-san wa Hakarenai (Aharen Is Indecipherable) and Bye Bye, Earth. At least it wasn’t an obviously questionable decision in the case of Aharen-san. I liked the first season a fair amount, and probably could not really have predicted how bored I would get with its second season. It still has funny moments on occasion, but I certainly like it a lot less than I enjoyed the first season. We’re talking sub-Lazarus tier enjoyment at this point (mid-season).
I don’t know if I like Belle’s character so much as I like the idea of her character.
With regard to Bye Bye, Earth, I’ve entirely lost the plot. I don’t know if the anime is genuinely confusing or if it’s because I don’t pay close attention anymore while watching it (or both), but I have no idea what’s going on now. Or rather, I have no idea why the events that are happening are occurring or what anyone’s motivations are at this point. My interest in Bye Bye, Earth has always centered around its penchant for weird ideas and quirky variations on otherwise familiar things. It still has those, but they mostly seem like nonsense at this point. I suppose that’s appropriate considering its Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland flavors, but it’s less fun than the Lewis Carroll sort of nonsense.
