Lord of the Rings Getting Its Own Hogwarts Legacy-Style RPG

A brand-new Lord of the Rings RPG is reportedly in development, and sources suggest it’s being designed as the franchise’s equivalent to Hogwarts Legacy.

The report comes via Insider Gaming’s Mike Straw, who claims the project has been in the works for some time. Funding is said to come partly from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), which is preparing to invest close to $100 million. The deal is reportedly in its final stages and could be confirmed as early as next week.

While the primary studio behind the game hasn’t been named, several companies are mentioned in connection with the project, including Embracer Group and Revenge.

Embracer notably acquired Lord of the Rings video game rights back in 2022 for around $400 million, though the investment has yet to pay off. Both The Lord of the Rings: Gollum and Tales of the Shire launched to poor reception, leaving fans hungry for a proper AAA entry.

According to Insider Gaming’s source, the upcoming RPG will be third-person and aims to “compete with Hogwarts Legacy.”

While details remain vague, the comparison suggests a game that lets players explore famous Middle-earth locations through an original story, rather than simply retelling Tolkien’s saga.

If accurate, the game would mark the biggest Lord of the Rings release in years and a major attempt to give fans an immersive RPG experience akin to stepping into the Wizarding World.

For now, though, both Embracer Group and Revenge have declined to comment, stating they do not address “rumors and speculation.” As with any unannounced project, development volatility means plans could still change.

Still, the idea of a full-fledged Lord of the Rings RPG — with AAA backing and the ambition to rival Hogwarts Legacy — is bound to excite fans of Middle-earth.
