Several business leaders from across the West Midlands gathered last week at the National Motorcycle Museum for Solihull Cyber Advice Network (SCAN): Business Resilience 2025, a collaborative event designed to help SMEs protect themselves from the growing threat of cyber attacks.
Hosted by Solihull based Discus Systems plc, the morning brought together the West Midlands policy led Cyber Resilience Centre, tech specialists, insurers, and business advisors for a series of interactive demonstrations, live threat simulations, and practical sessions on how to build resilience in a digital-first world.
Empowering SMEs Through Education and Collaboration
Attendees heard from leading experts on topics including cyber insurance, phishing prevention, and incident response. The focus was on accessible, real-world actions every business can take – regardless of size or technical expertise.
“Cyberattacks don’t just target large corporations. Small and medium businesses are hit every day,” said Damien Buddulph, MD, Discus Systems plc. “SCAN is about empowering local firms to take simple, value-added steps that make a big difference. Education, awareness, and regular reviews are the first line of defence.”

Key Takeaways for Local Businesses
Event speakers shared a series of immediate steps that business owners can put in place today to strengthen their defences:
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on all user accounts.
- Check your backups — make sure they’re secure and can be restored.
- Run a Dark Web scan to identify compromised credentials.
- Keep software and devices up to date to prevent known vulnerabilities.
- Train your team regularly to spot phishing emails and social engineering attempts.
Proactive Support and Free Reviews
Attendees were also offered complimentary Cyber Security Reviews, providing tailored feedback and practical recommendations to strengthen their systems and processes.
“We’ve seen first-hand how devastating even a minor cyber incident can be for an SME,” added Cassandra Campbell, event organiser at Discus Systems plc “A quick review can highlight simple fixes that prevent costly downtime and reputational damage.”
Businesses that missed the event can still take part by booking a free review and receiving a Dark Web or Domain Security Report.
