TikTok Hair Trend Sparks Alarm as Expert Warns of Damage to Brits’ Hairlines

A leading hair specialist has raised concerns about a viral TikTok trend that could be damaging hairlines across the UK. The popular “clean girl aesthetic” encourages the use of strong hair bond repair products applied directly to the hairline to create a slicked-back look. While the videos showcasing this glossy style have gained millions of views, experts are warning that repeated use may lead to thinning hair and long-term follicle damage.

The trend, which surged in popularity in 2024, promotes applying these treatments several times a week, often for prolonged periods. This practice goes against manufacturer instructions that recommend limited use to prevent harm to the scalp and hair. According to Anders Reckendorff, a hair expert from Scandinavian Biolabs, the misuse of these products could have lasting effects.

“Most people, even beauty enthusiasts, have no idea these strong bond repair treatments can actually destroy hair follicles at the hairline when improperly used,” Reckendorff said. “The chemicals are usually safe for the hair when used for the right amount of time and in the right way, but they can absolutely ruin your natural hair growth when used in the wrong way.”

These products are intended to restore damaged hair by coating the strands, which makes them appear thicker and shinier. However, excessive application can block the scalp’s natural oils and suffocate follicles. Reckendorff explained: “The smooth result from wearing the product gives people false relief that it’s working. The chemicals coat the hair and create a thicker appearance, but at the same time, they choke your hair follicles and stop natural protective oil from reaching your scalp.”

The resulting damage resembles male pattern baldness, where follicles shrink and eventually stop producing healthy hair. The NHS reports that hair loss affects about 6.5 million men and 8 million women in the UK, with chemical damage identified as one preventable cause. Symptoms such as increased shedding, scalp irritation, and a receding hairline may not appear for months.

“Key warning signs to look out for include seeing more shed hair after brushing than usual, itchy or red areas on your scalp, and a receding hairline,” Reckendorff cautioned. “Be aware that by the time you spot serious thinning in the mirror, the damage may have reached devastating levels that might be impossible to fix.”

To minimise risk, Reckendorff recommends gentler hair care practices. “If you want a single rule to live by for optimal hair health it’s this: Be extremely sceptical of any social media trend promising miracle hair results overnight,” he said. He advises avoiding aggressive brushing or tight hairstyles, limiting the use of heat tools, and following all product instructions carefully. He also highlights the importance of supporting scalp health with nourishing shampoos and conditioners.

The British Association of Dermatologists supports this advice, stressing that excessive chemical use can worsen hair loss, particularly in individuals with sensitive scalps. Research has shown that users experienced scalp irritation when bond repair treatments were applied without following proper guidelines.

As TikTok continues to influence beauty habits, experts urge users to prioritise reliable information and long-term care over viral shortcuts. With hair loss already affecting millions, taking preventative steps is more important than ever.
